Discover simple and effective ways to attract hummingbirds to your yard with feeders, native plants, and water features.
Do you love hummingbirds as much as I do? These tiny, mesmerizing birds are among the most delightful visitors to our backyards.
I enjoy having them around so much that I go out of my way to create nests for them or provide materials they can use to build their own.
If you’re eager to see more hummingbirds in your outdoor space, here are five tips to attract them.
1. Provide Shelter
Hummingbirds naturally seek out sheltered areas to protect themselves and their nests from harsh weather and potential predators.
They are drawn to trees, dense shrubs, and thick plants that offer not only a safe spot to build their nests but also an easy place to find cover.
2. Install a Nectar Bird Feeder
A nectar bird feeder, often called a hummingbird feeder, is specifically designed to hold a mixture of table sugar and water.
Hummingbirds are drawn to these feeders and will happily use them, especially if you place the feeder in a strategic, sheltered location. Be sure to keep ants away from the hummingbird feeder, as they’re just as attracted to sweet drinks as hummingbirds are.

3. Control Predators
Hummingbirds are quite shy and will quickly leave or stay away at the first hint of danger. To help them feel safe, try to keep a large area of your backyard free from pets such as dogs and cats.
It’s also essential to deter wild predators, like snakes, frogs, lizards, and feral cats, by removing food sources such as scraps and keeping the area clean.
Similarly, avoid frequent movement through hummingbird-friendly areas of your outdoor space, as humans can also be perceived as a threat.
4. Plant Nectar Rich Flowers
The best way to attract hummingbirds to your outdoor space and encourage nesting is by cultivating plenty of nectar-rich flowers in your garden.
Some great examples include the cardinal flower, butterfly bush, honeysuckle, and bee balm. It’s ideal to choose native plants and flowers since local hummingbirds are more familiar with these and are likely to thrive around them.
In addition to attracting hummingbirds, these bright and colorful flowers can greatly enhance the beauty of your outdoor space. However, be aware that bees, wasps, and other insects are also drawn to these blooms.
To minimize potential disruptions, it’s wise to plant these flowers away from seating areas, so insects and wasps won’t intrude on your patio or relaxation spots.
5. Water Source
Like all birds, hummingbirds need water to drink. You can help by placing a small bird bath in your garden that they can easily access.
However, because hummingbirds are so tiny, they don’t require a large water source. A modest water mister or bubbler can be just as effective and inviting for them.
